I am a visual story teller, PROUD MAMA
AND LOVER OF ALL THINGS YELLOW.
TRACY BAKER // OWNER + LEAD CREATIVE
Hello! I’m Tracy and I'm an illustrator/photographer/general creative person based in Northern Ontario. I work from my ‘studio’ in the fenced off half of my living room in Sudbury. I have a two year old son named Wolfe who keeps me company and is the reason for the fence.
In 2016, I co-founded Makers North with fellow northern creative Julieanne Steedman of Heirloom Island. MN is a northern Ontario based small business aimed at increasing the visibility of handmade creators in the north. Through markets, meet ups, workshops and juried exhibitions, Makers North strives to create an inclusive community of makers that supports and celebrates each other while contributing to creative culture in Northern Ontario.
I teach a variety of classes at Cambrian College in both the Graphic Design and Visual Arts programs. Classes range from history to studio based classes such as illustration and fundamentals courses.
I often collaborate with my musician/carpenter husband, Josh Turnbull, including our self published children’s book, The Awful Alphabet. It’s a hilariously silly way for children to not only learn the alphabet, but also learn not to get stuck on little mishaps…after all, it could be worse!
Why Yellow House?
Why Yellow House? My siblings and I grew up in a big yellow house filled with love, where we learned hard work and passion will take you far…but big laughs with good friends will take you the rest of the way. When my mom passed away in February 2018, I realized I needed to stop waiting for the right time and pursue my goals. Since she was my biggest cheerleader and best friend, I wanted to dedicate the name of my studio to her memory so I could keep her close as I go through my days. Yellow House is in honour of my mama and the beautiful life she gave me.
FUN FACTS & TIDBITS
As a kid, I never dreamed of being an illustrator. My grand plan was to become a 'Bug Doctor' and open a hospital for all the little critters who needed legs glued back on and wings mended. Unfortunately that didn't work out, so here I am. A chronic doodling, podcast listening, all around caffeine addict.
I still get to mend boo boos, except they're on a chubby lil toddler who (if I'm being honest) is much cuter than a grasshopper anyhow.
I switch constantly between podcasts, music and netflix binging while I work.
Current fave podcasts:
- Last Podcast on the Left
- Myths & Legends
- Sigur Ros
Current Netflix binge:
- Dark Tourist
Growing up I earned the oh so flattering nickname Lee Lee Bum. It was given to me by my Grandpa because my middle name is Lee & whenever I went to the beach I would toddle my chubby baby butt down to the water and just sit on top of it like a lily pad. I wouldn’t get out of the water and would pretend I couldn't hear my mom hollering from the shore.
I no longer perch on the water, but enjoy swimming to this day.
